Binary Converter
Convert text, decimal numbers, hexadecimal, or octal values to and from binary directly in your browser.
About This Binary Converter Tool
Use this free browser-based binary converter to turn plain text, decimal numbers, hexadecimal values, or octal values into their binary (base 2) equivalent, or convert binary digits back into the original format. Processing happens locally in your browser, so no server request is needed just to perform the conversion.
Which Mode Should You Use?
| Task | Recommended Mode | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Convert readable text to binary (and back) | Text | Hi → 01001000 01101001 |
| Convert a base-10 number to binary | Decimal | 42 → 101010 |
| Convert a hex value to binary | Hexadecimal | 2A → 101010 |
| Convert an octal value to binary | Octal | 52 → 101010 |
Important: Text Binary Uses 8-Bit Groups
When converting text, each character is represented by its 8-bit (one byte) binary value, separated by spaces. When converting numbers (decimal, hexadecimal, or octal), the tool outputs the plain binary digit string for that value, with no fixed bit-width padding unless the number naturally requires it.
Common Binary Reference Values
| Decimal | Binary | Hexadecimal |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 8 | 1000 | 8 |
| 16 | 10000 | 10 |
| 255 | 11111111 | FF |
| 1024 | 10000000000 | 400 |
Common Developer Use Cases
Binary conversion is useful for learning number systems, debugging low-level code, working with bitwise operations, networking (IP/subnet masks), color values, and computer science coursework. If you need to work with hexadecimal or Base64 data instead, try SmartWebHub's Base64 Encoder & Decoder. For percent-encoded URL data, use the URL Encoder & Decoder. To generate a checksum of a binary value, try the MD5 Hash Generator.

Binary vs Other Number Systems
Binary (base 2) uses only 0 and 1, decimal (base 10) uses digits 0–9, hexadecimal (base 16) uses 0–9 and A–F, and octal (base 8) uses digits 0–7. Each system represents the same underlying value differently, so converting between them changes the representation, not the quantity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Select Text mode, paste your text, and click To Binary. Each character is converted to its 8-bit binary value.
Paste the binary digits (space-separated for text mode), choose the matching mode, and click From Binary.
The decimal number 42 is 101010 in binary.
No. Both represent numbers, but binary uses base 2 (0–1) while hexadecimal uses base 16 (0–9, A–F). They are different representations of the same value.
The conversion functions in this widget run in your browser. No server-side processing is required for the conversion.
